Why Growatt WiFi modules do not support 5GHz networks

Disclaimer: This content is for informational and educational purposes only. The diagnostic steps described are suggestions, not an official service manual.

Phenomenon: ShineWiFi-S/X dongles fail to connect when router set to 5GHz-only mode.

Technical Causes:

  • Hardware limitation: Growatt WiFi modules use chipsets supporting only 2.4GHz band (802.11 b/g/n).
  • 5GHz networks have separate SSID or combined bands without backward compatibility in some routers.

Diagnostic Procedure:

  • Check router settings: Confirm if SSID is 5GHz exclusive.
  • Observe dongle LED remains red during connection attempts.

Resolution:

  • Enable 2.4GHz band on router (dual-band preferred).
  • Use same SSID for 2.4GHz and 5GHz if router supports band steering, or create dedicated 2.4GHz SSID.
  • Position router for adequate 2.4GHz signal strength (better range than 5GHz).
  • Reconfigure dongle to new 2.4GHz network.

WARNING: Maintenance and repair of PV systems, high-voltage DC, and AC components must only be performed by certified professionals with valid electrical qualifications (e.g., SEP/G1 in Poland, or local European equivalents). Unauthorized opening of the inverter housing will void the warranty and carries a risk of electric shock or fire.

In case of persistent hardware failure, the only authorized path for repair is contacting the official Growatt Service Department.
