How the Growatt AXE 5 kWh energy storage battery works
Growatt AXE 5 kWh is a modular, low-voltage (LV, 51.2 V) LiFePO4 energy storage battery. It charges from solar power (and, in off-grid systems, also from the grid or a generator) and supplies energy to the loads and in backup mode. The integrated BMS manages the operation of the whole cluster.
In practice, an energy storage battery increases the self-consumption of your solar power: instead of exporting surplus energy to the grid at a low price and buying it back at a higher price in the evening, you use your own energy when you need it. Combined with a hybrid inverter, the energy storage battery also provides backup power for key circuits during a grid outage.

Compatible inverters and accessories
Growatt AXE 5 kWh is a low-voltage (LV) energy storage battery, designed to work with: the Growatt SPF 6000ES Plus inverter included in the set. Battery management relies on the integrated BMS for safe operation. For mounting, the base for floor-standing installation is used. Note: the voltage class of the battery (LV/HV) must match the inverter — we will confirm the pairing before you order. You will find the full range of inverters in the shop.
What the set includes
Growatt SPF 6000ES Plus + AXE 5 kWh is a factory-matched package. It pairs the Growatt SPF 6000ES Plus off-grid inverter (6 kW of power, 2 MPPT trackers, IP65 ingress protection) together with an energy storage battery of 5 kWh (1× AXE 5.0L-C1 module, low-voltage (LV)) plus the integrated BMS and the base for floor-standing installation. The inverter and the battery are factory-matched — the voltage class (LV), current ranges and BMS communication all line up, so the installer does not source components separately or verify compatibility.
A set is the simplest route to a working energy storage system: one delivery, one warranty card for the whole package and no risk that a separately purchased module turns out to be incompatible with the inverter. The capacity can be expanded later with additional battery modules.
The Growatt SPF 6000ES Plus inverter — what it can do
The heart of the set is the Growatt SPF 6000ES Plus, a off-grid inverter rated at 6 kW. It manages the flow of energy: it charges the energy storage battery with surplus solar power, supplies the loads and switches over to the battery when production does not cover demand. The parameters below come from the manufacturer’s datasheet.
| Inverter model | Growatt SPF 6000 ES Plus |
|---|---|
| Rated power | 6 kW |
| Type | off-grid inverter |

Sizing the energy storage capacity
Modular expansion: 1-10 modules of 5 kWh each per cluster, up to 8 clusters = as much as 400 kWh — from a home system to an industrial installation. Capacity is matched to the daily energy consumption and the goal of the investment: to increase self-consumption, an energy storage battery covering the evening load is usually enough, while real backup power calls for more capacity and power. Write to info@growatt.tech — we will size the system for your installation and inverter.
Growatt AXE 5 kWh — savings and self-consumption
In many European markets, depending on your tariff, electricity exported to the grid is worth less than the electricity you later buy back. The Growatt AXE 5 kWh energy storage battery reverses that balance: surplus solar energy that would otherwise be exported at a low rate is stored on site and used in the evening and at night. Self-consumption goes up, electricity bills go down, and the payback period of the PV investment gets noticeably shorter. On top of that comes a value that is hard to put a price on — energy security: during a grid outage, the energy storage battery together with a hybrid inverter keeps the most important circuits running in a home or business. The higher the energy prices and the bigger the daily consumption, the faster the energy storage battery pays for itself — which is why sizing should start from the real consumption profile, not just from the installed PV power.
Growatt AXE 5 kWh parameters in practice
the high depth of discharge (DOD 92%) lets you use nearly the full capacity in practice. Cobalt free lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells are thermally safe and resistant to degradation.
Construction: IP20 ingress protection, operation across a discharge temperature range of 0~50°C, a weight of 42 kg at 650/350/165 (W/D/H) mm in size.
Safety — LiFePO4 cells
Growatt AXE 5 kWh is built on lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells. This is currently the safest chemistry in common use in residential energy storage: it is thermally resilient, contains no cobalt and is far less prone to thermal runaway than older NMC cells. The built-in battery management system continuously supervises individual cell voltages, temperature and the charge and discharge currents, disconnecting the energy storage battery in case of anomalies and balancing the cells for a longer service life. Combined with the long cycle life, this translates into years of maintenance-free operation of the energy storage system.
Installation and operation
Growatt AXE 5 kWh should be installed by a qualified installer according to the manufacturer’s manual. The IP20 ingress protection rating determines where it can be mounted; pay attention to the operating temperature range and ventilation. The energy storage battery is managed by the BMS and the inverter — once commissioned, its status (SOC, charging, discharging) can be checked remotely in the ShinePhone app. The product is covered by a European service warranty of 5 or 10 years (depending on variant), per the manufacturer’s terms.

What sets the series apart — Growatt AXE 5 kWh
The AXE 5.0L series is a scalable LV energy storage battery — from a single 5 kWh module to clusters of up to 400 kWh in total — for off-grid systems, single-phase hybrid inverters and WIT-HU inverters.
What to check when selecting the Growatt AXE 5 kWh
The most important thing when buying an energy storage battery is matching the voltage class of the battery to the inverter: this model is low-voltage (LV), so it works with the Growatt SPF 6000ES Plus inverter included in the set. A battery of the wrong voltage class will not work. It is also worth planning the target capacity up front (modular expansion is easy, but sizing the system from the start is more convenient) and the installation spot with a suitable temperature range and ventilation. If in doubt, send us your inverter model at info@growatt.tech — we will confirm the pairing before you order.
